Questions to ask when touring an assisted living facility
A tour shows you the building and the people. The official inspection record shows you the history. Use both: read the record before you go, ask questions on the visit, and check what you heard against the record afterward.
Before the tour: read the record
Look up the facility on the official Florida record first. Note its licensed bed count, its license status, and its deficiency history by severity class. Bring the specifics with you. A facility with sanctions or repeat complaints on the record is worth asking about directly.

Staffing
- How many caregivers are on each shift, day and night, for the number of residents?
- What is the process when a resident needs help at 3 a.m.?
- How long have the current caregivers and the administrator been here?
Care and health
- How are medications stored, tracked, and administered?
- What happens when a resident's needs change or increase?
- How does the facility coordinate with a resident's doctors?
Safety and the record
- Ask about any deficiencies, complaints, or sanctions you saw on the official record.
- What changed after the most recent inspection?
- How does the facility handle emergencies and evacuations?
Daily life
- What does a typical day look like? What activities are offered?
- Can residents choose their own schedule, meals, and visitors?
- Talk to residents and families who are already there.
After the tour: check what you heard
Compare the answers against the record. If a facility describes a spotless history but the record shows repeat Class 2 deficiencies, that gap is worth understanding. The record is the same for every facility, and it does not change with the sales pitch.
